Grass, Clover and Forage Seeds
The
introduction of outstanding new Grass and Clover varieties has led to major opportunities to improve
efficiency and profitability on UK dairy farms. In the last 10 years development of new
grass seed varieties has lifted yields by 20% and D-Values by 10%. New clover varieties
are 50% higher yielding and are 10% more persistent under UK agricultural conditions.
If you haven't reseeded for a while you could easily be losing 30% in feed output per acre and having to make good the deficit with extra fertiliser and costly concentrates.
Quality forage forms the basis of any high yielding dairy diet
Modern grass seed varieties, especially the new High Sugar Grasses varieties developed at IGER are much higher yielding than existing grass seed varieties, more importantly they are nutritionally far superior.
Since the launch of the first Aber HSG variety, AberDart, a number of other perennial ryegrasses including AberAvon, AberZest, AberStar and now AberMagic, and AberHybrids such as AberEcho and AberEve, have been introduced.
The Aber High Sugar Grasses (HSG) are the result of several decades of focused research, field trials and animal performance testing at IGER (now IBERS). IGER based in Aberystwyth is the worlds foremost grass and clover breeding centre. The HSG grasses have the advantage that they have been bred specifically for UK conditions.
The HSG varieties are consistently higher in both sugars and in digestibility than other grass varieties on the NIAB list. In addition they offer extremely high yields with excellent disease resistance and persistency under UK conditions. That said they are now widely grown overseas with over 20,000 ha of HSG grasses having been sown in New Zealand.
The only genuine High Sugar Grasses bear the Aber HSG logo and have been demonstrated to be higher in sugar than the first HSG grass Aber Dart.
As dairy nutritionists we formulate our Grass Seed Range with maximum nutrition in mind. One unit of D-Value is equivalent to around one litre of extra milk yield. The perennial high sugar rye grass varieties are clear leaders and form the basis of the RWN Grass Seeds Range which is formulated specifically for dairy farms.
The new High Sugar grasses are higher yielding than other grass varieties, they have excellent persistency and disease resistance and most importantly are extremely high in energy with very high digestibility and are nutritionally far superior to other grass seeds.
There has never been more reason for dairy farmers to reseed

RWN Grass
and Clover Seed Mixtures are produced by British
Seed Houses and are formulated to the best quality available. Our range is based on IGER grass and
clover varieties, which are bred specifically for UK farm conditions. IGER now have a wide range of grasses
and white clovers which offer clear advantages over most of the other varieties available.
IGER High Sugar Grasses have been shown to produce up to 2.5 litres more milk per cow than conventional rye grass reseeds. IGER Hybrid Ryegrasses can produce 40% more yield of first cut silage than perennials. AberEve has out yielded Italian Ryegrass, but has much better feed value and much greater persistency than Italian Ryegrass.
IGER Aber White Clover varieties can produce 50% more yield than traditional white clovers and are much more persistent even under high nitrogen regimes.
Aber High Sugar Grass Varieties
Sugar, an excellent source of fermentable energy for rumen microbes is often
deficient in UK dairy cow and livestock diets. High Sugar Grasses have been shown to produce
up to 2.5 litres more milk per cow than conventional rye grass reseeds
.
In addition protein utilization has been shown to be improved by up to 25%. Availability of high sugar bought-in feeds, at competitive prices is limited. The most cost effective source of sugar for dairy and livestock diets, is the sugar from home grown High Sugar Grasses, either grazed or conserved as silage using an effective inoculant. RWN Grass Seed mixtures are formulated to maximum D-Value and Sugar levels as well as exhibiting extremely high yields, disease resistance and persistence.
There has never been more reason for dairy farmers to reseed
Aber White Clover Varieties
White clover has a D-Value 5 - 10 units better than the best perennial
ryegrasses
as well as being much higher in protein and being at it's best in late summer when grazed
grass quality is deteriorating.
IGER Aber White Clover varieties can produce 50% more yield than traditional clovers and are much more persistent even under high nitrogen regimes. A mixed grass / clover sward without the need for nitrogen applications can produce 75% of the forage dry matter yield of an all grass sward receiving 300 units of nitrogen. Grass / Clover at the same level of nitrogen can produce up to 13% more DM yield and up to 3.5 litres more milk per cow per day.
RWN Grass Clover Seed can generate up to £500/acre more profit per acre over the life of a ley compared to other seed
Other Forage Seeds
RWN also offer a comprehensive range of forage seeds for agriculture which include: Maize Seed, Forage Peas, Wholecrop Mixtures, Fodder Beet, Lucerne, Red Clover, Kale, Forage Rape, Stubble Turnips, Swedes and a wide range of Hybrid Forage Brassicas.
